B2B Distributor of Hardware Products

Bringing a regional hardware distributor's ordering experience online - replacing phone-and-fax workflows with a self-serve B2B platform.

Confidential-Hardware Distributor

Overview

Company

The client is the largest independent hardware distributor in the United States. They serve independent hardware stores, home centers, and lumberyard stores across the eastern U.S. and the Caribbean Basin. Their state-of-the-art facilities stock over 55,000 items, delivering high-efficiency logistics and outstanding dealer support.

Historically, the clients’ retail customers used handheld scanners to submit orders via text file, a process that required significant hardware management and limited flexibility. To address this, the client partnered with Ten24 Group to develop a custom mobile solution.

Project Objective

The objective was to build a native mobile application to modernize order and inventory management operations, replacing legacy handheld scanning devices. The solution needed to offer:

  • Improved order efficiency
  • Seamless online/offline functionality
  • Integration with existing ERP (ProfitPoint)
  • An intuitive and modern user interface

Phase 1: Engineering

User Interface & Wireframes
Ten24 developed interactive wireframes and a functional prototype to visualize the application’s user experience and map key workflows. The prototypes were reviewed and validated collaboratively with the client, ensuring the proposed solution aligned with their operational processes, user needs, and business requirements before development began.

Integration Planning
To support seamless connectivity with the client’s homegrown ERP platform, Ten24 developed detailed API specifications defining how data would be exchanged between the mobile application and existing systems. This integration planning established a clear technical framework for reliable data synchronization and communication across the platforms.

Technical Implementation Plan
Ten24 delivered a comprehensive Engineering Document outlining the project scope, implementation approach, phased delivery timeline, and cost structure. The plan also included resource requirements and risk assessments, providing the client with a clear roadmap for development and ensuring the project could be delivered efficiently and with greater predictability.

Phase 2: Development & Testing

During Phase 2, Ten24 developed and tested the core functionality of the mobile application, focusing on improving order management, inventory receiving, and day-to-day operational efficiency.

Order Creation & Management
Users can create, review, edit, and submit orders directly through the application. The app supports offline order creation by storing orders locally when connectivity is unavailable and automatically synchronizing data once a connection is restored. Market-specific orders also include unique identifiers, enabling the business to support targeted promotions and market-specific buying cycles.

Invoice Receiving
The application enables users to scan items as they are received against an invoice, providing full visibility into invoice and delivery records. The system helps identify and manage discrepancies between ordered and received quantities and can automatically generate credit requests for missing or damaged items.

Credit Requests
A streamlined credit request workflow simplifies the process of submitting and managing requests related to returns, damaged products, missing items, or pricing discrepancies. Standardized workflows help ensure requests are handled consistently and efficiently.

Label Printing
Users can print item and bin labels directly from the mobile application, making it easier to organize inventory and improve shelf management and product identification.

Account Permissions & Switching
The application includes secure user authentication and role-based permissions to control access to functionality and data. It also supports account switching, allowing dealer representatives who manage multiple locations or accounts to easily move between them within the application.

The Results

The new mobile application eliminated the company’s dependency on legacy handheld scanning hardware while significantly improving the efficiency and accuracy of order processing. The solution provided real-time visibility into order and invoice activity, giving users greater insight into day-to-day operations. Improved usability, combined with reliable offline functionality, also strengthened the overall dealer experience and increased satisfaction with the platform.
